How is Trichomonas transmitted?

Trichomonas can be passed on through vaginal, anal or oral sexual activity. It is usually found in the genital area and can be passed on through genital to genital contact.

How will I know if I have Trichomonas?

The only way to know if you have Trichomonas is to get tested, as many people experience no symptoms, especially in the early stages of infection. Symptoms, when present, are similar to other STIs, so it is important to get tested in order to treat the infection with the correct medication. Symptoms may include:

  • Painful urination
  • Unusual discharge
  • Painful intercourse
  • Women: unpleasant fishy smell, inflammation or itching around the vagina
  • Men: painful ejaculation, soreness, swelling and redness around the head of the penis or foreskin

What tests are available for Trichomonas?

Better2Know's Trichomonas test requires a urine sample (women can choose a vaginal swab if they prefer). Trichomonas is also included a number of our comprehensive screening options, such as:

  • Comfort Screen
  • Platinum Screen

How is the infection treated?

Trichomonas is curable and can be successfully treated with the right course of antibiotics. Better2Know’s expert sexual health advisors can assist you in deciding your next steps should you test positive for a Trichomonas infection. They can arrange a private consultation with one of our doctors in Asia, who will discuss your diagnosis with you.

You may wish to consider having a repeat test at the end of your treatment to check that the infection has completely cleared. You are advised not to have unprotected sex with your partner until you have finished your treatment and any symptoms have been relieved. Your partner(s) should also be tested and treated to avoid re-infection.
