How is Trichomonas transmitted?

Trichomonas can be passed on through vaginal, anal or oral sexual activity. It is usually found in the genital area and can be passed on through genital to genital contact.

How will I know if I have Trichomonas?

The only way to know if you have Trichomonas is to get tested, as many people experience no symptoms, escpecially in the early stages of infection. Symptoms, when present, are similar to other STIs, so it is important to get tested in order to treat the infection with the correct medication. Symptoms may include:

  • Painful urination
  • Unusual discharge
  • Painful intercourse
  • Women: unpleasant fishy smell, inflammation or itching around the vagina
  • Men: painful ejaculation, soreness, swelling and redness around the head of the penis or foreskin
